Phlox (/ˈflɒks/; Greek “flame"; plural "phlox" or "phloxes":
A perennial flower that’s a nod to something in nature that lasts for more than one season. A plant of intense color, literally: flame
our mission
We believe that ‘fast’ fashion is not only an environmental crisis, but a spiritual one. We’ve lost a sense of adoration for what we purchase, the companies and designers we invest in, and what we place on our bodies.
Our mission is to help people purchase beautiful pieces that are made-to-last; pieces that they love; and that express their style and values.
Meet maria
I’m a first generation American born to Sicilian parents. My parents always looked stylish and glamorous. And my relatives in Sicily are the same. They have incredible taste and just know how to wear things and and take care of them, too.
My family taught me the value of investing in high-quality, beautiful clothes. They believe it’s better to buy one timeless piece you adore rather than five mediocre things you barely like.
This philosophy is the foundation of everything I do at Phlox.
I took this mindset for granted growing up, but in my 20s I started gravitating towards clothes as a way of expressing who I was.
I seemed to have inherited my parents’ eye for beauty and quality. I noticed when I felt an emotional connection with a piece, it stayed in my closet for a long time and felt alive and open each time I wore it.
Because of this relationship with my clothes, I've always wanted to be in fashion. But my style of shopping and buying has always felt out of step with the fashion world.
During the covid lockdown I had an “aha” moment listening to Li Edelkoort on the Business of Fashion podcast. She talked about how the pandemic was forcing us to slow down. I realized I could show people what my Italian family has taught me about choosing beautiful clothes that are meant to last.
A model of shopping came to me - the kind of experience where the focus is on helping people carefully buy pieces that are right for them and they can love and wear forever.
And when the designer holds the same values—creating for the long run—you’re also supporting an individual and a cause through what you purchase.
I believe buying just for the sake of buying isn’t good for your well being. But when you buy a piece you love...well, that’s a very fulfilling and satisfying experience. Nothing beats that feeling.
As I establish relationships and build this new business, I want to introduce you to a different way of choosing what’s in your wardrobe.
